Healthcare Choices illustrates an easy-to-learn plan to approach any decision regarding your health and medicine. Backed by a wealth of professional knowledge, Healthcare Choices applies the CARES model to several real questions from pediatrics to end of life care that were sent by concerned patients. The model introduces new ways to perceive healthcare, and challenges the status quo of relying on physicians to make every decision. It emphasizes the power of autonomy while also providing refreshing discourse on the evolving healthcare system in the U.S. Healthcare Choices was a pleasure to read, well-researched, and a great gift for anybody interested in how to improve healthcare.

Most recently I decided to apply the CARES model to an absess tooth problem I’d been having all winter l-o-n-g! I needed to make a choice between more root canal treatments, continuing bacteria/infection and tons of pain vs pulling the tooth with the expense of oral surgery and an implant. And vanity played a role too, since my tooth was close to the front of my mouth. So, I weighed all my options because I needed to make a decision rather quickly. Well, I made the decision to have the tooth pulled and it truly empowered me! Had I not applied the CARES steps my clarity would’ve been cluttered and confused and I may have chosen to just take the advice of my Endodontist instead of trusting myself. Get this book and apply to other areas of your life too, because this system WORKS!

Throughout the book, Dr. Georgiou inserts medical questions she has received from Facebook users. As a someone in their twenties, it makes me realize that these questions come from my peers— a community of individuals who don’t want to go to the doctor for neither simple nor complicated questions. Healthcare Choices demonstrates that people crave more information than their doctors offer, and then offers an empowering framework to help these people make their own informed decisions.

One of my biggest takeaways from Healthcare Choices is that “health” and “healthcare” are not synonymous. Healthy individuals can live in an a community with poor healthcare, and the reverse is true as well. I now realize that I have to take care of myself at the same time a healthcare system fulfills my needs. I will listen and ask questions, I will do research, and I will get second opinions.

This book will be my go-to manual on healthcare decisions. The CARES model is intuitive and easy to use. It reflects how you would logically approach making decisions about your healthcare - but dives deeper and makes sure you consider ALL the issues (including ones you didn’t know about unless you are in the medical industry!) I love the great resources listed and tips on how to approach your medical consultations. I will be recommending it to friends and family — especially those that are dealing with chronic illnesses!

Wow! What a great, straightforward read. As a biology and anatomy/physiology professor, I teach a great many future health care professionals. I will use Dr. Georgiou’s book as suggested reading and will highlight sections for discussion in my courses. Her CARES model of taking charge of your health care in not just relevant to health, but for all topics that are in need of data-informed decision making. In fact, I already used the model to make two decisions related to my family’s health care. One aspect that I really liked was that she routinely uses actual scientific studies to back up her claims. Also, she does not discount the value of personal preference in decision making and suggests strategies on how to incorporate preference, but not bias, into decisions. Nice work!

Healthcare Choices is an empowering guide for every citizen and healthcare consumer. The healthcare industry is extremely complex – so daunting, in fact, that most people blindly place their trust in doctors and insurers without ever questioning decisions made on their behalf. Archelle has personally represented all sides of the equation – as a consumer, working for an insurer, and as a physician – allowing her a unique perspective of the healthcare obstacles we all face. She effectively conveys personal stories using a storytelling technique and anecdotes from her Facebook page. Archelle also explains her CARES model: five easy steps to getting the medical care you want and need. As someone in charge of my own health, the health of my children, and (soon) the health of my aging parents and in-laws, I feel this book has prepared me to be a more active participant in my own healthcare journey. I now feel empowered to challenge the status quo! Do yourself and your loved ones a service and buy this book today!
